The Clarkston Library was established in 1991 on the site of the former neighborhood high school. Community members were invited by the City of Clarkston to help demolish the old school building, paving the way (both symbolically and literally) for the new library building.
In April 2024, a mural was painted on three outer walls of the Clarkston branch. Sponsored by Alif Institute and created by contemporary artist eL Seed, the mural reflects both the library and the diversity of the Clarkston community. eL Seed chose the quote “Genius everywhere is one” from The Book of Khalid by Ameen Rihani, the first English-language novel by an Arab American writer. The vibrant artwork features eL Seed’s signature “calligraffiti” style, Arabic calligraphy blended with graffiti, often incorporating quotes or poetry.
